Shane O'Brien and Rob Davison are healthy scratches from the roster tonight.
D-man Ossi Vaananen will play his second game as a Canuck, partnering up again with Kevin Bieksa. Vaananen made his debut on Tuesday, playing limited ice time, due in part to the amount of time the Canucks spent on the power play and penalty kill. Finding and Keeping a Healthy Body Weight (For Kids)

Some great ideas on how to help your kids keep a healthy body weight.
I found this article at http://www.aboutkidshealth.ca

Tips for living a healthy lifestyle for teens and kids.

Eating well, being active, and feeling good about yourself are all part of a healthy lifestyle. Along with what we suggest here, please follow the recommendations in Eating Well With Canada’s Food Guide. Ask your dietitian for a copy if you do not have one.

You can also find the guide here: http://www.hc-sc.gc.ca/fn-an/food-guide-aliment/index_e.html

Here are four basic things to remember about achieving and maintaining a healthy weight:

  • Be active.
  • Establish healthy eating patterns.
  • Make healthy food choices.
  • Feel good about yourself.

Put a check mark next to the things you are going to try.

Be active

  • Try to be active every season.
  • Participate in gym class.
  • Try increasing your current activity level by 30 minutes per day to start.
  • After checking with your doctor and physiotherapist, aim for 20 to 30 minutes of vigorous activity and 90 minutes of total activity per day, 4 to 5 times per week.
  • Choose different activities that you like so you don’t get bored.
  • Choose some activities that you can do in your neighbourhood or at home, like walking or biking.
  • Limit the amount of time you spend watching TV and playing on the computer to 90 minutes per day or less. Start by reducing your current daily screen time by 30 minutes per day.
Establish healthy eating patterns
  • Eat 3 meals a day. Do not skip meals –- especially breakfast.
  • If you are hungry between meals, plan to eat a healthy snack such as yogurt and fruit, cut up fruits and vegetables, or whole wheat crackers and cheese. 1 to 3 healthy snacks a day are okay.
  • Eat slowly and without distractions like homework, TV, and toys. That way, you will know when you are full.
  • See "Eating Well withCanada’s Food Guide" for common portion sizes. If you aren’t sure about portion sizes, talk to your dietitian.
  • Eat at home more often. Try to eat out less often.
Make healthy food choices:
Drinks
  • Choose water. If you don’t want water, choose from a variety of sugar-free drinks.
  • Remember to get your recommended servings of milk. Choose 2%, 1% or skim milk.
Vegetables and fruits
  • Choose fresh fruits and vegetables instead of juice and dried or canned fruit.
  • Limit juice to 1 glass per day.
  • Choose fruit canned in juice instead of syrup.
  • Use herbs, spices, and lemon juice to add flavour to vegetables, instead of butter and cream.
Grain products
  • Choose whole grain breads such as whole wheat and whole rye.
  • Choose cereals made from whole grains. Try not to eat sugary cereals and granola.
Milk and alternatives
  • Choose 2%, 1% or skim milk.
  • Choose cheese with less than 20% of milk fat. It should say 20% m.f. on the package.
  • Limit the use of table cream, whipped cream, and sour cream. Choose low-fat versions of these products.
  • Choose sherbets, ice milk, gelato, and frozen yogurt more often as alternatives to ice cream.
Meat and alternatives
  • Choose leaner cuts of meat, such as loins and rounds.
  • Cut away visible fat from meat. Take off the skin from chicken or turkey.
  • Choose tuna and other fish canned in water instead of oil.
  • Limit the use of gravy and sauces.
  • Try having legumes, soybeans, and tofu as a source of protein.
Treats
Treats do have a place in a healthy eating lifestyle. Eating a treat every once in a while is part of balanced eating.
  • The key is moderation. Limit yourself to one to two treats per week.
  • Try not to keep too many treats in the house.
  • Choose healthier treats if you can.
  • Do make exceptions for special occasions that may involve treats, such as parties, holidays and other special occasions.
Feel good about yourself
  • Remember that healthy bodies come in different shapes and sizes.
  • Focus on the positive changes you have made to your lifestyle.
  • Do not weigh yourself often. Don’t compare different scales.
  • Reward yourself for your efforts. You deserve it.

Modern signs of childhood obesity

With having 2 young boys in my life I'm very interested in articles about our children.
This one is about obesity which is becoming an epidemic!!

Childhood heart attacks, stroke, and diabetes are on the rise

Times have changed.

“When we started the clinic 15 years ago, we primarily saw kids who had congenital heart problems; problems they had inherited,” says Brian McCrindle, chief of the paediatric cholesterol and cardiac clinics and a cardiologist at Toronto’s SickKids Hospital. “Today we’re seeing obesity as the cause of these problems. And it’s not just my clinic. Across the board, gastroenterologists are seeing an increase in fatty livers; endocrinologists are seeing a boom in diabetes.”

Dr. McCrindle could well have added juvenile heart attack, high blood pressure, insulin resistance, unsafe cholesterol levels, and stroke to this inventory, all on the rise and caused in large measure by unhealthy weight gain in children. “The implications of what happens when kids become overweight is like putting the pedal to the floor in accelerating atherosclerosis,” he says, adding yet another obesity-related condition to the list.

Childhood obesity has become so bad that a new populist label has been coined to describe what happens when kids suffer with three or more symptoms. “This cluster of risks is loosely defined as ‘metabolic syndrome’,” Dr. McCrindle says, explaining that these risks together make children more susceptible to further problems.

Lifestyle changes for long-term health

Dr. McCrindle blames the epidemic on calorie-dense, sugary foods marketed directly to kids. This, he says, comes at a time when physical activity is being programmed out of school and an explosion of media-based pursuits is replacing outdoor activity. “It takes two minutes to eat a chocolate bar, and 40 minutes of running to use up those calories.” He says schools must teach children fitness routines for life, otherwise heart conditions and other “diseases of the old" will more and more become diseases of the young. “We need a coordinated action plan.”

Dr. McCrindle advises parents to make sure their children are snacking on fruits and vegetables. He says the only thing children over the age of two should be drinking is low-fat milk or water with their meals. He also says there should be limits set on computer and other passive activities. “If possible, being active with your children is the best example you can set,” he says.

The alternative to being active and eating right

Bariatric surgery, where the stomach is surgically reduced up to a tenth of its size, is now performed routinely in the U.S. on children. A smaller stomach means less food can go in it at any one time. The surgery is a last-ditch attempt at weight loss and like any operation, should not be taken lightly.

7 Foods You Have to Stop Ignoring

Alright some more Heathy/Diet tips for those interested.

They may get B-list treatment at the supermarket, but their health benefits deserve top billin

*-1.Beets

If beets give you ''clean your plate'' flashbacks, it's time to give them a second chance. They are one of the best sources of betaine and folate, two nutrients that reduce heart-disease risk.

Tip: Wash and peel one fresh beet, then shred it on the widest blade of a grater. Toss with 1 tablespoon of olive oil and the juice of half a lemon.

*-2.Cabbage

Cabbage makes you gassier than the Goodyear blimp, but each 22-calorie cup is loaded with sulforaphane, a chemical that increases your body's production of the enzymes that disarm cell-damaging, cancer-causing free radicals.

Tip: Top off a burger with crunchy cabbage instead of soggy lettuce leaves.

*-3.Dried plums

Prunes' popularity among geriatrics has ruined its image. Too bad, because these fruits contain high amounts of neochlorogenic and chlorogenic acids, antioxidants that are effective at protecting against cancer growth.

Tip: Wrap a slice of prosciutto around a dried plum, secure with a toothpick, and bake in a 400°F oven for 10 to 15 minutes.

*-4.Goji berries

Goji berries are already a hit with hardcore smoothie fans. The natural sugars in these gems help boost the immune system and have also been found to reduce insulin resistance (which may help offset diabetes) in rats, according to one study.

Tip: Mix berries with a cup of plain yogurt or sprinkle some on oatmeal or cold cereal.

*-5.Guava

The deliciously sweet yellow and pink guava has a higher concentration of the cancer-fighting antioxidant lycopene than tomatoes and watermelon, often considered to be the best sources of the protective red pigment.

Tip: You can use the entire fruit, from the rind to the seeds.

*-6.Purslane

Pronounced ''perslen,'' this common garden weed happens to have the most heart-healthy omega-3 fats of any edible plant. One nibble and you'll discover that its stems and leaves are crisp and succulent, with a mild, lemony flavor.

Tip: Top a bed of purslane with grilled chicken and lemon vinaigrette.

*-7. Swiss chard

Like spinach? You're gonna lurve chard. A half-cup cooked delivers 10 milligrams of lutein and zeaxanthin, carotenoids that help guard against retinal damage caused by aging, say researchers from the Oregon Health and Science University.

Tip: Saute chard with a little olive oil and garlic for a super-simple side.

Health Canada may consider regulating how snow sport helmets made.

Another great article about head protection and helmet use in sports!!
I am all for Helmet wear!! We have to protect our noggins!!

By Sheryl Ubelacker, Health Reporter, The Canadian Press

TORONTO - Health Canada has begun public consultations on whether ski and snowboard helmets should be required by law to meet new guidelines by the Canadian Standards Association.

The federal department announced the consultation process Tuesday after the CSA said it is introducing certification testing next month for manufacturers of snow sport helmets under its new standard.

However, CSA certification is voluntary - ski and snowboard helmet manufacturers do not have to submit their products for scrutiny in order to sell them in Canada.

That could change if Health Canada decides after consultation wraps up June 1 to move ahead with regulation of the industry. One possibility is that mandatory CSA certification could be required under the Hazardous Products Act.

"The department can put in place restrictions that allow only helmets meeting certain safety criteria, such as those in CSA standards, to be sold in Canada," Health Canada spokeswoman Christelle Legault said Tuesday by email.

"Health Canada is considering whether the new standard should be referenced in Canada's product safety legislation."

But Legault said the federal government cannot pass a law requiring skiers and snowboarders to wear a helmet while hitting the slopes and pipes. Only provinces, territories and municipalities have the jurisdiction to enact such legislation.

Despite the lack of definitive action, CSA vice-president John Walter views Health Canada's announcement as a positive sign.

"I think this is a very serious indication from Health Canada that they understand the value of this standard and they understand the need to consider the adoption into regulation," he said.

"If that happens, you couldn't sell any other (helmet) in Canada except one that met this standard."

But Liberal MP Hedy Fry, who has tabled a private member's bill calling for non-CSA approved snow sport helmets to be banned under the Hazardous Products Act, accused the Conservative government of dragging its feet on the issue.

"This government does consultation on everything," she said from Ottawa. "It's a simple stalling mechanism to go and do consultation."

Fry has been urging the government to use a Governor-in-Council order to add recreational ski and snow sport helmets to the list of products already covered by the existing act, which includes hockey helmets and face masks, and lacrosse helmets.

"And with a simple stroke of the pen through government council, the cabinet could agree to add it to the list," she said. "This is a simple preventive thing. It's not going to cost the government a penny."

CSA International will begin offering testing for certification of ski and snowboard helmets in Montreal next month, said Walter, noting that the new Canadian standard exceeds safety requirements under U.S. and European guidelines.

The non-profit organization's announcement follows the death of actress Natasha Richardson, who sustained a brain injury in a fall at Quebec's Mont-Tremblant ski resort. She was not wearing a helmet.

Helmets given the CSA stamp of approval would have to meet minimum levels of shock absorption, stability and strength, and provide protection to specified areas of the head most vulnerable to injury. The standard also applies to helmets for tobogganing and sledding.

"These helmets are meant to sustain multiple impacts, where a number of helmets that are manufactured are only supposed to (take) one severe fall and they should be thrown out and another one purchased," Walter said.

Canada to fight French claim to sea shelf: minister

Geesh...everyone wants to get their greedie lil hands on pieces of Canada Northern Areas!!
BACK OFF and Shame on you!!

OTTAWA (AFP) - Canada's top diplomat said Wednesday his country "regrets" and will fight France's renewed claim to the North Atlantic seabed around two tiny islands off the Canadian coast, believed to hold vast oil riches.

The French government faced intense pressure from the economically marginalized citizens of the French islands of Saint-Pierre and Miquelon to stake a claim to thousands of square kilometers (miles) of seabed south of Canada's Newfoundland province.

Paris said Wednesday it would make a new claim before the UN Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf before a May 13 deadline.

Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Lawrence Cannon reacted by saying his government "regrets" the French government's decision to reopen its claim to "an extended continental shelf for Saint-Pierre and Miquelon."

He noted the maritime delimitation between Canada and the French archipelago was "settled definitively" by a 1992 arbitration decision that awarded France a 12,000 square kilometer (4,600 sq. mile) economic zone around the two islands.

Populated by some 6,000 descendants of French fishermen, Saint-Pierre and Miquelon were granted to France in the 1763 Treaty of Paris. But the territory is completely surrounded by Canadian waters.

Local residents, still reeling from the cod fisheries collapse last decade, reportedly are frustrated at not being able to participate in an offshore oil boom benefiting only Newfoundland.

"Canada does not recognize France's claim to any area of the continental shelf in the northwest Atlantic Ocean beyond the area set out in the arbitration decision, and Canada has made France aware of its position on several occasions, and again recently," said Cannon.

"Canada will take all necessary measures to defend and protect its rights with respect to its continental shelf," he added.

Armed man disrupts AA meeting

Wow...this is just messed up!!
Glad the outcome was not a disaster!!

CALGARY (CBC) - A man walked into an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting in Cochrane, Alta., and brandished two loaded guns, but the situation was diffused peacefully.

Just before 8 p.m. on Tuesday, RCMP were called to Weedon Community Hall just north of Cochrane about a man who walked in with a revolver and a shotgun.

The man made no explicit threats, said RCMP Const. Darleen White in a news release.

He unloaded and surrendered the weapons at the request of people attending the meeting, who then walked out of the building with the guns and gave them to police.

The suspect left on foot and was arrested by the RCMP about an hour later without incident, said police.

Charges are pending.

10 ways to sneak exercise into your day

Ohh I found this one for those of you who want a little more exercise in your lives without having to hit the gym. I'll definately have to try some of these.
Give it a try...see how it can work for you.

It's easy -- anyone can keep fit bit by bit!

Exercise doesn't have to be an all-or-nothing proposition to deliver good results. With just a minute here and five minutes there, you can end the week with calorie burning that makes a difference. The key to sneak exercise into your day is to create intensity-increasing habits that are built into you day. If you're committed to certain "to do's" every day -- laundry, grocery shopping, banking, house cleaning, even meetings and meals -- why not sneak in a few exercises while you're doing these activities?

Here are 10 ways to get fit, bit by bit. You don't have to spend a dime or find much more time!

1. Practise proper posture
By making an effort to stand tall and proud, you contract dozens of muscles from your legs up to your neck. Muscle contraction burns calories and builds muscle. Whether you're ironing, doing dishes, or standing in a lineup at the bank, concentrate on keeping a solid stance, a slight bend in your knees, an open chest (i.e. standing tall, not slouched), with shoulders depressed and head up. Not only does proper posture provide exercise but it helps you feel better too -- more confident and poised.

2. Step it up
Health Canada encourages Canadians to TAKE THE STAIRS. Whether you work or live in a building with stairs, ditch the elevator and/or escalator and climb your way to a fitter you. An average 160-pound person can burn about 50 calories climbing up stairs for four minutes. If that person continues to take the stairs for the same length of time five days a week, by the end of the year he or she burns about 12,700 calories (or about four pounds of fat). If there are too many stairs to climb in order to reach your destination, start by climbing up one or two flights before hopping on the elevator. Health Canada's Stairway to Health online calculator offers a fun way to see how even little efforts pay off in a big way over time.

3. Leg it to laundry
Whether you're folding clothes, ironing or waiting for the rinse cycle, captive time is ideal for adding in some lovely leg work. Stand and perform 10 to 15 plié squats (think ballerina). Position your heels just beyond shoulder width with your toes rotated out to 45 degrees. As you drop into your squat, keep your knees in line with your toes and make sure your head, shoulders, and hips align or "stack up" as you drop down. To return to starting position, squeeze the muscles in your butt as you stand tall.

4. Squeeze to please
Your gluteus maximus -- affectionately known as your "butt" -- is the largest muscle group in the body. Fire it up and you'll burn calories. Whether you're standing or sitting, an invisible butt squeeze (tighten, hold for two seconds, release) repeated 10 to 15 times, one to three times a day, will tighten your tush and burn additional calories. Remind yourself to practise proper posture and push through your chest as you return to the starting position. Aim for 10 or more repetitions.

5. Back to basics
Imagine you're squeezing a pencil between your shoulder blades and you have to hold the muscles tight so the pencil doesn't fall. It doesn't take long before the muscles in your back start to fatigue, does it? Any time you re-align your posture, sit or stand a bit taller, and avoid a slumped posture, you're exercising your back and core muscles.

6. Push up bra-vo!
Did you know that five pushups work over seven different muscles and burns up to 10 calories? Not only do pushups target chest muscles, but they shape shoulders and tighten core muscles too. If you don't want to "get down and gimme five," place you hands on the edge of your desk or the back of your couch, step back far enough so your body is at about a 45-degree angle to the floor, then lower your body.

7. Do the can-can
Before you open up a couple of cans of soup at mealtime, do a few lateral raises to tone your shoulders. Holding a can in each hand, stand tall with your arms at your sides. Lift your arms up so your arms and body form a "T" pose. The cans add weight for resistance, so if you're feeling strong, choose chunky soups. Try 10 to 15 repetitions. One set will take you all of 30 seconds to complete.

8. Bring on biceps and bags
The next time you're carrying your grocery or shopping bags to your car, perform a series of biceps curls as you do. Keep your elbows at your sides and palms up as you hold the handles. Curl your groceries toward your shoulders. Lower and repeat until you get to your car or until your biceps tire out. Need more of a challenge? Park further away from the store's entrance.

9. Dine and dip
Every chair is a triceps-working machine waiting to tighten and tone your arms. Before you start each meal, grasp the front of your seat (knuckles facing forwards,) hoist your body weight into your arms, inch your behind over the edge of the chair and lower yourself down into a dip down and then push into your arms to come back up. Drop down 20 to 30 centimetres, keep shoulders square and solid, and extend through your spine (as if you're running it along the chair edge). Kill the jigglies by doing as many repetitions as you can.

10. Abandon the snack run
When it's commercials time, skip the trip to the fridge, and sneak in a set of crunches instead. Lie on the floor, tighten your abdominals, and then perform your favourite abdominal exercise 10 to 15 times. You'll be burning off during break time instead of adding on.

For more ways to sneak exercise into your day, visit Fitness Jumpsite's Calorie Calculator. Enter your body weight and the duration of your exercise and it'll display a list of hundreds of activities and how many calories you can burn. Find your activity (or a reasonable facsimile) and record your success.

8 Reasons to eat breakfast everyday.

Yes I admit it!! I USUALLY do have a hard time eating breakfast even though I realize it is IMPORTANT to eat it. So I when I DO have something I usually have one of those diet shakes, store bought already made or home made, depending on the time I have to spend in the mornings, only because they are quick and easy. So for all you other peeps out there that are like me and not eat breakfast... here's a SPECIAL article for you I found.

Why eating a healthy breakfast could be the answer to weight-loss success.
Your mom was right: you need to eat breakfast everyday. Experts say fuelling up is the best way to kick your life into high gear each morning. Skipping this crucial meal can deprive you of nutrients and energy, reduce your concentration, and – we're not lying – make you pack on the pounds. Here's why you need to eat breakfast every day.

1. Eating breakfast helps you lose weight
"There's well-documented evidence showing that eating breakfast correlates with long-term weight loss and weight maintenance," says Charlene Chen, a clinical dietitian with the Vancouver General Hospital.

Eating regular meals, says Chen, "stimulates metabolism and signals the body to start using fuel, instead of hoarding fuel." When you skip meals, however, the body goes into lockdown mode, burning far fewer calories.

So get your metabolism humming each morning with a healthy meal. Your waistline will thank you.

2. Skipping breakfast is tied to being overweight
Studies have shown that breakfast-skippers – of all ages – are more likely to be overweight than regular breakfast eaters.

In fact, said one study published in the American Journal of Epidemiology, skipping breakfast isn't just associated with being overweight, but with obesity. (Overweight refers to having a body mass index (BMI) of 25 to 29.9 per cent, while obesity refers to having a BMI of over 30.)

What's your BMI? Find out here!

Translation: If you aren't already overweight, your breakfast-skipping habit may be pointing you in that direction.

3. Skipping it makes it harder to meet your nutritional needs

According to Canada's Food Guide, adult women need at least seven servings of fruit and veggies per day, six of breads and cereals, two of dairy, and two of meat and alternatives.

Wow! How are you going to pack that into a mere two meals a day? (Answer: You can't!) So start your day by checking off at least two or three servings from the list.
On a diet? No problem, says Chen: Just eat to lose. "Recent studies have confirmed that a breakfast containing 2 to 3 oz of protein is best at inducing weight loss and increasing satiety and fullness," she says.

Chen says you can find that in:
• two or three eggs, or
• two to three tablespoons of peanut butter, or
• 15 to 21 almonds, or
• two or three slices of low-fat cheese

Have some cereal or a slice or two of whole-wheat toast, plus a serving of fruit to balance out the meal for a healthy start.

4. It's easy, even if you're not hungry
Okay, we'll admit that some mornings the idea of a meal is just unappealing. If you feel queasy at the idea of choking down toast, try a liquid breakkie instead. Concoct a simple DIY smoothie with a banana, handful of berries (frozen fruit makes it a snap), low-fat milk and orange juice.

Or swap your office latte for a Starbucks Vivanno breakfast drink, which provides one fruit serving, 16 grams of protein and 5 grams of fibre per yummy, 270-calorie, 16-ounce serving. Add a hit of espresso to the Chocolate Banana flavour for a no-calorie jolt of caffeine.

5. You'll have more energy

Food literally provides you with energy. When you start your day on nothing, you're running on empty. But if you eat up, you've got what you need to make it through your workday, and, hopefully, a lunchtime gym session, too!

6. You're less likely to cheat on your diet
Spacing your calories throughout the day at regular intervals is better than going through a starve-binge routine each day. Don't deprive yourself of breakfast – or other meals for that matter – or you may just find yourself losing control later in the day.

Seriously: would you rather eat a wholesome breakfast and then have one small but satisfying slice of cake at your office colleague's birthday party, or skip breakfast and then gorge yourself on multiple slices of cake washed down with pop?

7. You'll feel smarter
"Eating breakfast provides an energy boost to the brain for mid-morning alertness and performance," says clinical dietitian Chen.

Fuelling up your brain is the right thing to do whether you're at the office, in class, or on the go. After all, who can concentrate when their stomach's rumbling?

8. You're setting a good example for your kids

A University of Minnesota study published last year in Pediatrics found that 25 per cent of teens regularly miss breakfast. Some do so to save time in the morning, but a sizable portion does it in a misguided attempt to lose weight.

An earlier Finnish study found that children who skip breakfast are more likely to have parents who also skip breakfast.

Unfortunately the results of skipping breakfast are the same for youths as adults: less energy and concentration, a higher likelihood of obesity and nutritional deficit.

So eat up, because your kids are watching you!

Start eating together as part of your family routine, or, for those rushed mornings, at least keep an array of healthy on-the-go snacks like cereal bars, bananas and low-sodium roasted nuts in the kitchen and breakfast will become part of your family’s healthy lifestyle.

6 Reasons People Stop Working Out

Another Health and Exercise Article I found.

Sources: www.gforcetraining.com
found at http://healthandfitness.sympatico.msn.ca

You used to hit the gym every day and now it's a monthly visit.

You’ve managed to keep up on an exercise routine for the last while now, when suddenly you just can't seem to work up the strength or willpower to get in another workout. So what happened?

Everyone has his or her own reasons for stopping, but the key to overcoming this problem is to figure out what your reason is and to come up with a strategy to conquer it.

Reason #1:
You Can’t Find The Time

This is probably the most common complaint. You have your career, a mate and possibly kids to attend to, not to mention your friends who want to spend time with you. Demands on your time will always be there, working against your need to stay fit and healthy.
_______________________
WHAT YOU CAN DO

  • Schedule workout time into your day just like you would for any other important appointment. Once it's written, commit to your workouts by scheduling other things around them.
  • Schedule shorter sessions. If you only have 30 minutes, you can still get a great workout, as long as you push yourself hard. If you don’t even have 30 consecutive minutes, studies have shown that three 10-minute workouts throughout the day can be as effective as 30 continuous minutes. Remember it's quality over quantity.
  • Make the most of your workout time by doing compound exercises that will work many muscles all at once (e.g. dumbbell chest press, squats, etc.). You can also do superset exercises that alternate between agonist and antagonist muscle groups like biceps and triceps, or between upper and lower body exercises. This way you can work one muscle group while the other is resting and cut that dead time out of your workout.
  • Make the location of your workouts convenient by finding a gym that is on your way home from work or simply work out at home.

Reason #2:
You Don't See Results

You've been working out for a while and haven’t yet seen results, so you become discouraged and unmotivated. This means that you need to re-evaluate your workout routine.
_______________________
WHAT YOU CAN DO

  • Get help from a personal trainer. Professional trainers will be able to pinpoint areas of weakness in your program and help motivate you and push you beyond your plateau.
  • Make sure your goals are realistic. Whether your goals are for weight loss or weight gain, slow and steady wins the race. Try to get out of the instant gratification mind trap that is so common in our culture. If your goal is a large one, break it down into smaller pieces so you can continuously make small achievements.
  • Eat healthy. When your diet is on track, your efforts in the gym will be much more noticeable.
Reason #3:
You Are Self-Conscious

If it has been a while since you last worked out, you may feel out of shape, especially compared to other people in the gym that have been there for years. If you're a newbie and you don't understand many of the basic concepts, you might feel intimidated by all the different equipment and machines.
_______________________
WHAT YOU CAN DO
  • Talk to a personal trainer. If you work out at a gym, a personal trainer can show you how to use the machines and set up a basic program for you. You can also hire an in-home personal trainer to help you get to a level of fitness where you feel comfortable joining a gym.
  • Do your workouts during non-peak hours at the gym so there will be fewer people around.
  • Keep in mind that we all have to start somewhere and that it's only a matter of time before you see improvements.
  • Work out with a friend – preferably one who is more experienced. Your workouts will be more enjoyable and you'll have a spotter.
Reason #4:
No One Supports Your Efforts

Whether it stems from jealousy or a lack of appreciation for the benefits of exercise, you may feel pressured by your loved ones to not work out. Your mate may be angry that you're cutting into your “couple time” and your friends may become slightly resentful of your rapidly improving body and the fact that you're making them look bad.
_______________________
WHAT YOU CAN DO
  • Invite your mate and/or friends to work out with you to try to get them interested in fitness.
  • If they are not interested in joining you, make it clear that you are working out to feel better about yourself and to improve your overall well being.

Reason #5:
You’re Bored

Using stationary cardio equipment like a treadmill or doing the same weight-training exercises can get boring. Not only that, but your body adapts to the same type of exercise over time and you will end up at a plateau.
_______________________
WHAT YOU CAN DO

  • This is probably starting to sound repetitive, but a personal trainer can teach you new exercises and can add that extra “oomph” to motivate you during your workouts. Research the specific skills the trainer might be able to utilize to keep you interested in his or her style of training.
  • Read a fitness book or magazine and try some new exercises. Alternatively, try a whole new form of workout such as boot camp, kickboxing class or yoga.
  • Take your workouts outside. Jogging, cycling or rollerblading outside will change up the scenery for you and keep things more interesting. Plus the fresh air and being closer to nature can do wonders for a dampened frame of mind. Training outdoors releases more serotonin resulting in an overall positive feeling.

Reason #6:
You’re Burnt Out

Everyone experiences a bit of a burnout or a psychological barrier from time to time.
_______________________
WHAT YOU CAN DO

  • Take a break. It’s important to take a week off every couple of months to let your body rest and repair itself. It can also help you refresh your spirit and re-motivate you to get active.
  • Motivate yourself by visualizing the results you hope to see.
  • Reward yourself by buying something you really want after a given amount of successful sessions. Or treat yourself to your favourite snack on your cheat day.
____________________________________
get back in the game
Try not to stress too much if you find yourself losing interest in working out. Most people at one time or another will experience the same thing you’re going through. What you need to do is take a good look at the underlying factors that are pushing you away and come up with an action plan to come out of the rut.

Are your hormones making you fat?

Another article for those of you who are watching your weight.

Chemical messengers hold the key to a healthy body.
Find out how to make them (and you) happier.

It seems that lately, everywhere you turn you see the latest diet "shtick" guaranteeing quick and easy weight loss. From counting points to restricting calories to eating grapefruit and dropping bread, there is no shortage of books, tapes and programs to help guide you on this journey. Curiously, even with a multitude of weight loss approaches to choose from, over 60 per cent of the North American public continues to be overweight or obese. This begs the question -- is the weight loss industry a billion-dollar industry because it's working, or because it's not?

In order for permanent and successful weight loss to occur, the key messengers in the body -- hormones -- must first be addressed.

If hormones such as insulin, glucagon and cortisol are out of whack due to faulty food choices and stress, achieving a healthy body weight, high energy and normal blood sugar levels is very difficult, if not impossible.

Hormones and food
Carbohydrates such as fruits, vegetables, grains and legumes break down into glucose (aka sugar) and are the body's number one choice for fuel. However, pick the wrong type of carbohydrate repetitively, and you will begin to throw the hormone insulin out of control.

By consuming too many high glycemic index carbohydrates such as white bread, white pasta, white potatoes, white sugar and white rice, blood sugar (glucose) levels spike, causing oversecretion of the hormone insulin. Insulin is secreted from the pancreas to lower blood sugar levels by opening up gates on cells, allowing the sugar to enter the cells.

When eating too many refined carbohydrates such as white flour and sugary products (high glycemic index "carbs"), blood sugar levels spike, sending a signal to the pancreas to oversecrete insulin. In a nutshell, excess insulin secretion facilitates the excess storage of fat.

6 Workout Mistakes That Slow Down Results

Ok so if you don't know this already...I am on a weightloss journey! How much do I need to lose?? Well let's just put it this way...We won't go there!!
So every now and then while I'm surfing for some great articles to read up on I will post them as I know a few people are interested in them.
Hope they can help.

Busting your butt without any progress? It's time to tweak your routine! Why Is Your Weight Loss Stalled?

You huff and puff through cardio sessions, but that extra layer of flab just won't budge.
Surprise: Your workout might be to blame. We talked to trainers and exercise physiologists across the country and discovered six surprising ways that well-intentioned fitness routines can put the brakes on weight loss goals. "Many women assume that 30 minutes of exercise will change their bodies, but it's not automatic," says Geralyn Coopersmith, the senior national manager of Equinox Fitness Training Research in New York City. "If you're focused and smart about how you use that half hour, you will be amazed by your results." Here is what to do — and not to do — to rev your metabolism and slim down for good.

1. You Sacrifice Good Form
High-intensity exercise may burn loads of calories, but not if you're hanging on to the handrails for dear life. It is important to focus on your form, even if that means lowering the intensity. "You recruit fewer muscles and burn fewer calories when you're slouched over," says Coopersmith.

Same goes for strength-training, says James Levine, PhD, a scientist at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, whose research has found that standing while lifting weights boosts calorie burn by about 50 calories per half hour. Best of all, one study shows that good posture allows you to take in more oxygen so your workout feels easier, even while you're blasting more calories.

Do: Slow down and stand tall
The Results: Burn 50 extra calories per session

2. You Exercise While Parched
Experts are constantly back and forth on the merits of the 8-glasses-a-day guideline. However, when it comes to working out, the importance of drinking up is clear. "Nearly every cell in the body is composed of water — without it, they don't function efficiently during exercise," says Dan Judelson, PhD, an assistant professor of kinesiology at California State University in Fullerton. Translation: You'll fatigue faster and your workout will feel tougher than it should.

In recent studies, he discovered that exercisers who were dehydrated completed 3 to 5 fewer reps per set while strength-training. Part of the problem is that dehydration decreases the body's levels of anabolic hormone that are necessary for strong muscles. On workout days, drink an ounce of water for every 10 pounds of body weight (i.e., 15 ounces if you weigh 150) 1 to 2 hours prior to exercise. Then keep sipping during and after your session to replenish what you lose through sweat.

Do: Sip 15 ounces of water 2 hours before working out
The Results: More energy to lift weights and firm up faster

3. You Read on the Treadmill
"If flipping through a magazine keeps you motivated, by all means do it," says Coopersmith. "But reading while exercising is so distracting that you're probably working at an intensity too low to burn a significant number of calories." Magazines and books are just the tip of the iceberg — 1 in 10 of us reads texts or e-mail on a cell phone during workouts, reports a new survey by Standard Life, a health insurance company.

Instead, turn on some tunes to increase the duration and intensity of your cardio bout: Researchers at Brunel University in London discovered that runners who listened to motivational rock or pop music (think Queen or Madonna) exercised up to 15% longer — and felt better doing it. You don't have to nix TV shows, cell phones, books, and magazines every workout — just leave them behind a couple of times a week so you can focus on intensity.

Do: Listen to music
The Results: Burn 15% more calories

4. You Hate Your Workout
No matter how many calories an activity promises to burn, if you don't enjoy it, you'll be less likely to do it and won't reap the benefits. Think of it this way: If you burn 300 calories every time you exercise, but you dread it so much that you skip one session a week, it adds up to 1,200 calories a month — or more than 4 pounds a year.

Instead, find a workout you want to do, rather than one you feel like you have to do. When University of Nebraska-Omaha researchers polled women who'd been exercising regularly for longer than a year, they found that one of the top predictors of adherence was choosing enjoyable activities. Study author Jennifer Huberty, PhD, also suggests experimenting with ways to make exercise more appealing: For example, if walking is your workout of choice, try recruiting a friend to join you.

Do: Pick a cardio routine that's fun
The Results: Lose 4 pounds a year

5. You Skip Strength Training
Over 80% of women forgo strength-training, says the latest survey by the Sporting Goods Manufacturers Association. If you're one of them, it may be the number one reason your scale is stuck. You've probably heard that strength-training can boost metabolism, but here's something you may not know: People who pair aerobic and resistance training eat less — 517 fewer calories a day — than those who do only cardio, reports a new study in the Journal of Sports Science and Medicine. The combo workouts may increase satiety hormones more and boost the body's ability to break down food and stabilize blood sugar, so you feel full longer, says study author Brandon S. Shaw, PhD.

Do: Swap aerobic exercise for weights 3 times a week
The Results: Lose up to 12.5 pounds in a year

6. You Trust Calorie-Burn Estimates
Oh, how sweet it would be if 20 minutes on a cardio machine really did blast 400 calories. But like most things in life that sound too good to be true, those digital displays broadcasting mega calorie burn are often bogus. Recent research presented at the National Strength and Conditioning Conference found that elliptical trainers over-estimate calorie burn by an average of 30%.

If you're trying to create a calorie deficit to lose weight, those thought-you-burned-'em calories can add up over time and thwart your success. To ensure you're burning the number of calories you want, consider investing in a heart rate monitor. We love the FT40 by Polar because it's a cinch to set up and use ($180; polarusa.com). Input some basic info (weight, height, age, activity level, and so on) and the gadget will accurately track your heart rate to compute the number of calories you torched. Or, for a free check of your cardio machine's readout, cross-reference your calorie burn by logging your session at prevention.com/fitnesstracker.

Do: Track your burn with a heart rate monitor
The Results: Lose 3 pounds this year

"After Katie followed the Purification Rundown - an extreme detox where she had high doses of vitamins and spent five hours a day in a sauna - doctors and homeopaths were called in to maintain her looks and ensure her skin would not break out, a process dubbed the 'Scientology Sparkle'."

Happy Sunday!!!

Well today is the last day of the boys 2 weeks off for Spring Break!
Back to school tomorrow!! A part of me is happy about it,
but a part of me will miss them!
We've had a great time just hanging out as a fam even though there is daily fighting between the "D-man" and the "E-man". Some days I was ready to pull my hair out!
So they go back for 14 school days and then will have GOOD FRIDAY and EASTER MONDAY off for Easter!! I can't believe the time is slipping away from me like that!
Well the sun has decided to grace us with HER presence since yesterday but brrrr it still is cool out there!! Currently we are sitting at 6c[43F] which is about half of what the temperature usually is. Our average temperature for this time of the year is 12c[54F]. We are about 3 weeks behind in the flowering process. Usually by now the Cherry Blossom trees are in full bloom! I don't see a sign of them anywhere. My early spring flowers are out though. Mini Daffies and Crocuses.
So I'm just doing my Sunday duty...laundry...lol..well its almost an everyday duty here...lol...and "D-man" got home from a sleep over and is cranky as usual when he comes home from sleep overs. I think I am going to be rethinking the Saturday night sleep overs....and just Keep it to friday nights so he has more than a day to recoupe.
I can hear "E-man" freak out at dad while playing with the legos and mega blocks.
Whew....he's been screeching and crying more than usual lately. Most likely because he's been off his school routine for Spring Break. (In case you don't already know, "E-man" is on a waiting list to be assessed for PDD which is on the same spectrum as Autism. He is very high functioning though so we are blessed with that and how smart he is. Transitionally, behaviourially and socially he struggles.) Now back to what I was saying...lol....
Plus he thinks he's the adult and we have to follow his rules. Ahhh the joys of having a special child! I think my ears are about to pop...lol... So Im going to finish up what laundry I can today and the hubster and I are taking the kids out to do something as their last hooraw before they go back to school tomorrow!! Then hubster goes back to work on Tuesday from holidays...then he has his regular 3 days off...funny how that turned out for him.
Well TTFN!!
Hugs, Bonnie
